Leica GPS & Smart

What is it ?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation system developed by the United States Department of Defence which operates with a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites. These satellites transmit precise microwave signals, which enable a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time.

Our survey grade GPS receivers can observe signals from these satellites to compute their latitude, longitude and height.

Using a range of GPS data processing software we can fix the position of a survey station or detail point. This position is recorded in relation to a specified survey grid, such as:
  • Arbitrary local grid (scale factor of one)
  • Ordnance survey (O.S) national grid coordinates (OSGB36)
  • Latitude, longitude and GPS height (WGS84 or ETRS89).
Our Equipment:

We use a fleet of Leica system 530 and 1200 smartnet GPS receivers. The can be used individually, or in combination to tie together large networks of survey stations, provide quality assurance checks and constrain long thin surveys.

Real Time Kinematic (RTK) observations can also be used to survey points of detail over large areas without the need for line of sight as with a total station.

The Smartnet system gives us a real time fix to National Grid coordinates in the field without the need for post-processing the acquired data; increasing efficiency of data capture in the field.
