Engineering Surveying
  
Engineering Surveying is in many senses the opposite of Land Surveying. Information shown on an Engineer’s or Architect’s drawing has to be transferred accurately to the ground to ensure that buildings and structures are built in the correct shape and in the correct position. Precision is critical. A fence line 50mm out of position on a survey at 1:500 is within accepted accuracy; a house built 50mm out of square is not!

However, despite the critical nature of the engineering survey work (the “setting out”), many organisations delegate this task to junior staff, whereas Severn Partnership uses only senior staff for all Engineering survey work.

An engineering surveying project starts by liaising with the client to ascertain the required accuracies and to ensure that the engineer’s drawings are consistent and adequate. It is wise at an early stage to determine whether the new structure will fit on the site! Much of this can be done in the comfort of the office.

If a good quality original survey exists, time can be spent in the office to pre-compute as much as possible. This can save a great deal of site time. Where a reliable survey does not exist, enough survey work is carried out to provide sufficient information. All setting out work is then linked to this survey.

All work is fully checked by the surveyor and particular care is taken to liaise fully with site staff, as well as leaving a clear record of all work that has been done.

All work has to be carried out in accordance with long established good surveying practice. Our quality procedures have been accredited by BSI since 1992 and the high quality of our engineering surveying and setting out is appreciated by many clients.
